Company Introduces SMT-5000™ Modular Conversion Platform to Support Long-Term Nuclear Fuel Supply Chain Growth
Calgary, Alberta – May 12, 2026 – Nucleon Energy today announced the formation of Nucleon Fuel, a new subsidiary focused on the development, licensing, and operation of modern uranium conversion facilities in North America. The company also introduced its SMT-5000™ modular uranium conversion platform, a standardized facility concept intended to support the expansion of domestic nuclear fuel cycle infrastructure.
The launch of Nucleon Fuel reflects growing demand for secure, Western-aligned nuclear fuel supply chains as electricity demand accelerates across North America. The company believes additional uranium conversion capacity will be required to support the long-term deployment of both conventional nuclear generation and next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs).
The SMT-5000™ platform is being developed around a modular facility architecture intended to improve constructability, operational consistency, and future scalability relative to many legacy conversion facilities currently operating globally. Nucleon Energy expects the platform to incorporate modern industrial automation, contemporary safety systems, and enhanced environmental performance objectives as part of its development and licensing process.
“Nucleon Fuel was created to help address one of the emerging constraints in the nuclear fuel cycle,” said Dustin Wilkes, CEO of Nucleon Energy. “As governments and utilities increasingly focus on energy security, electrification, and long-term reliability, we believe North America will require additional conversion capacity built using modern standards, modern systems, and a scalable deployment model.”
Nucleon Fuel intends to pursue a phased development strategy for future conversion facilities in both Canada and the United States. Initial work is focused on siting, environmental planning, regulatory engagement, and development of a standardized licensing and deployment approach intended to support multiple future facilities over time.
The company is currently engaging with federal, provincial, and state stakeholders, along with potential industrial and utility partners, regarding future project development opportunities. Nucleon Energy expects future facilities to be designed and licensed in alignment with applicable Canadian and U.S. nuclear regulatory requirements, environmental standards, and international safeguards obligations.
“The long-term opportunity is not simply to build a single facility,” added Dustin Wilkes. “It is to help establish durable fuel cycle infrastructure that strengthens North American energy security and supports the continued growth of nuclear energy over the coming decades.”
